This week is the 4th/5th Grade Geography Bee!! Our 10 finalists will compete in front of a live 4th/5th grade audience Tuesday afternoon.
Reading: This week we will be reading more of The Liberation of Gabriel King.(this is mostly assigned to read independently). This text will help students make inferences and find evidence to support their thoughts. We are also reading novels (Tuck Everlasting & The Kid in the Red Jacket) and answering questions, having group discussions, and working on 1 type of writing a week. Students will be exposed to writing myths, autobiographies, biographies, news reports, tall tales, legends, and expository writing. Grammar: This week I will introduce the students to Greek & Latin roots. This will take the place of our typical grammar work. WEX: We will continue to work on the Response to Literature unit. Science: We will complete Lessons 5, 6, & 7. Students will continue to research their global water topic. Other: Mrs. Burns will be coming into our class during math on Weds & Thursday for an introduction to an authentic learning project! Students will be creating their "Dream Room". Don't forget this week is MAP testing (Reading, Language Arts, & Math!) and ACCESS testing for ELL. Get plenty of rest & have a hearty breakfast!
Reading: This week we will be reading more of The Liberation of Gabriel King, and use the Comprehension Toolkit to learn about ways to ask questions/infer while reading difficult texts. We will also be writing extended responses using the E-I-E-I-OH! model. Students are expected to use evidence from various texts and interpret what they in their own words. January Letter Template HERE January Project HERE (we will record in class!) Grammar: We will continue to practice main/helping verbs. WEX: We will complete lessons 2-5. Students must read assigned chapters in order to complete the daily prompts. We will be evaluating character traits and writing about the characters in The Liberation of Gabriel King. A big component of this unit is using text evidence to support their ideas. Science: We will investigate how water lands/interacts with various surfaces; porous, semi-porous, and non-porous. We will create a model to represent all the places where we can find Earth's water. Students will create another model with their groups to represent the water cycle's process. Other: Mrs. Burns will be coming into our class to introduce a new math project! We will also be meeting with Mrs. Polito to kick off a new project we will be working on during the Water Unit!
