Reading: We just finished up our unit of nonfiction instruction. Students were taught about various structures and common trends seen in this style of writing. Students completed a non-fiction newspaper to demonstrate their knowledge of what they learned. Two short assessments were given with 5th grade level texts to assess vocabulary/comprehension. Our new unit focuses on fiction. Students will learn to identify the plot, rising action, conflict, and resolution. This month, they will NOT be required to give a book talk, but will instead share their book project with the class. This will be recorded and shared on SeeSaw (online journal).
Students are responsible for finding 5 new "Power Words" each week, due Friday, to ensure they are reading "just right" books and learning new things as they read. I also provide students with chapter summary sheets to make sure they are thinking about their comprehension and stopping to assess what is important from each chapter.
Writing: Students in my writing group recently completed a personal narrative. With 2 weeks left until winter break, we are doing a unit on poetry and will revisit it again in April. Beginning in January, we will begin WEX UNIT 2, which is response to literature. Students will read a book and respond to it through their writing.
Grammar/Word Work: We are continuing to alternate between grammar packets and Greek/Latin Roots. Every Friday, their progress is assessed. Remind your student to use Quizlet to review the meaning of the words.
Social Studies: We are beginning Chapter 13 today. Students will learn why the colonists were motivated to win the Revolutionary War. We will do a poster project to help students review for a test late next week.
STEAM: This is the slideshow that will be shared with students to introduce it. We will be doing STEAM/Personalized Learning activities throughout the school year. Our school has a "Steam" cart with many new hands-on apps/gadgets for kids to use problem solving skills with.
Science: Our next science unit is on Energy. We will begin this in January.
Math: My math class will move from Unit 3 to 9 and 11, which all cover geometry topics.
